Shopify app opportunity for a Remix + Polaris developer

Where merchants already pay and the top apps are badly rated, repriced or shutting down: Stocky refugees, Shopify's Retail Barcode Labels, and subscription migrations.

01

Verdict

PIVOT

The pain is real and recent. Shopify shut Stocky on Aug 31 2026, and retailers can't print labels for what they just received on native purchase orders. But at least 8 apps already chase that exact gap, some for free, so a new public app has no opening. Pivot to a fixed-fee migration and receiving/label setup for small POS retailers, built on the new PO Read API, and only productize if 3 or more pay.

Receive-to-label for Stocky refugees

pain 8: merchants threaten to leave POS or Shopify over Stocky (e2, e5), many authors across App Store and Community (e1-e9). wtp 5: Stocky was bundled with POS Pro (e31), and price ceilings are low: $40 'insulting', nothing over $100 (e20, e21, e22, e23). gap 2: EasyScan already has POs plus unlimited labels at $9.99 with a 5.0 rating (e32). LabelCraft labels transfers (e33), FyreTrail prints only what was delivered (e42), Stockroom is free with labels (e41, e47), and native POs plus Quick count are free (e29, e30). fit 7: the founder's exact stack. reach 7: active Community threads and review pages, but promotion is limited to the Ask and Offer board (e44). build 6: weeks, on a new read-only PO API (e43).

Better barcode label app

Retail Barcode Labels is rated 2.3: 293 of its 476 reviews are 1-2 stars, and updates keep breaking layouts (e13-e19). But Shopify itself points merchants to alternatives (e39), those alternatives are free to $7.99 and rated 4.9-5.0, and merchants balk at any monthly fee for labels (e24).

Subscriptions for Bold / Shopify Subscriptions refugees

Migrations double-charge customers (e25-e28), but Appstle (5.0, 9,042), Seal and Loop are loved. Payments edge cases and support load don't fit 20 h/week.

03

The gap

The opening competitors leave, backed by what their customers say.

POS Pro retailers who lost Stocky can't print labels for exactly what they just received on a Shopify purchase order, because native POs have no label path and Shopify's Retail Barcode Labels makes them re-add every product by hand.

The case against

A separate critic pass argued against this. Here is what it found.

Risk: Pain is real but the price anchor is $0: free PO apps with labels already exist.

Answer: Unresolved.

Risk: Channel closed: Community allows app recommendations only on Ask and Offer, and new apps sit at 0 reviews.

Answer: Unresolved.

Risk: Copyable / already copied: at least 5 apps print labels from received quantities.

Answer: Unresolved.

Risk: Shopify could add 'print received items' to its own label app.

Answer: Unresolved.

Risk: Someone tried and died.

Answer: No graveyard found. Genie Inventory merged with Doss; the space is crowded, not dead.

Risk: No public API for native POs.

Answer: PO Read API shipped in 2026-10 (read-only), enough for receive-to-label (e43).

How to win

Specific moves that pull customers to you instead of them.

Your Stocky receiving and labels back, set up for your printer, in a week, for a one-time fee.

Switching triggers

Stocky shutdown and the read-only export window

→ Fixed-fee migration offer on the Ask and Offer board

A Retail Barcode Labels update breaks a label layout

→ Printer-specific template setup

Offers that win switchers
